Remember Educators' Guide
About the Book
Remember the sky you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon,
know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn,
that is the strongest point of time.
So begins the picture book adaptation of the renowned poem that encourages young readers to reflect on family, nature, and their heritage. In simple and direct language, Harjo, a member of the Mvskoke Nation, urges readers to pay close attention to who they are, the world they were born into, and how all inhabitants of the earth are connected. Michaela Goade, drawing from her Tlingit culture, has created vivid illustrations that make the words come alive in an engaging and accessible way. This timeless poem, paired with magnificent paintings, makes for a picture book that truly celebrates life and our human role within it.
Dragons in a Bag Series Guide
About the Series
A fantasy series following Jaxon, a former apprentice to a witch called Ma, as he learns about magic in Brooklyn and Chicago.
Caste (Adapted for Young Adults)
About the Book
This young adult adaptation by Pulitzer Prize–winning author Isabel Wilkerson explores the unspoken hierarchies that divide us along the lines of race and class. Revealing and timely, this work speaks to young people who engage with the world around them or to anyone who believes in a more just existence for all.
ALA Youth Media Awards (YMA)
Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards (YMA), which include the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, guide parents, educators, librarians, and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in children’s and young adult literature and media.
The 2023 Youth Media Award announcements will take place on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. EST / 8:00 a.m. CST, during LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, ALA’s newest conference offering launched in 2022. Those not in New Orleans for LibLearnX can watch a live stream of the award announcements, which will also be available on the American Library Association Facebook page.
